Despite the popularity of the sport, NASCAR has often been described by critics as a white man's sport. With the exception of a few pioneers, such as analyst NASCAR ESPN and former NBA All-Star Brad Daugherty, most racing coverage includes very few faces of color or women.
However, the diversity of NASCAR has been at the top of the sporting calendar for the past six seasons as a result of its Drive for Diversity initiative. The program seeks to develop minority and female drivers and crew members, giving them the opportunity to compete against established NASCAR talent.
One individual, drawing on the diversity NASCAR is 19 year old racing sensation Michael Cherry, who is in his second year in the Drive for Diversity program, and recently received sponsorship Nationwide Insurance.
"We are honored to support Michael Cherry while you work your way up to NASCAR," said Carlos Blanco Nationwide agent. "This sponsorship is a good opportunity for the whole country to support diversity in the races, and that is something that is very important to us.
